Soon, Android Messages will move to Google.com: Details here
Today, Google's ecosystem enables amazing syncing possibilities, letting users access their data on any device. The same goes for text messages, which can be viewed on any device and not just the Android phone in your hand. The capability stems from Android Messages' web app, but now, the tech giant is planning to move this platform to a new home - google.com. Here's why.
Android Messages' web app to be moved
At present, if you're using Android Messages' app for sending/receiving text messages, you can check those messages using the web version of the service. It can be accessed by visiting messages.android.com at the moment, but Google appears to be working on moving the service to its own domain, 9to5Google reported. This means, in future, the web app for messages would be accessed from messages.google.com.
How this change was confirmed?
The incoming shift from android.com to google.com was spotted in a Chrome OS source code commit. It is not enabled at the moment but has been designed to direct Chrome OS to switch to google.com while using "Better Together" features to open the web app.
But, why this shift?
Though Android Messages remain accessible via android.com, the upcoming shift could be a part of Google's broader effort to rebrand Android. As per Ubergizmo, the tech giant has been avoiding the term 'Android' lately and could be looking to transition into a universal OS covering both Android and Chrome OS (which already shares some Android features). However, that's just speculation at this stage.
So, when Android messages web app will move?
The commit spotted in the source code indicates an upcoming change, but there's no mention of the timeline. 9To5Google suggests it could be enabled with the release of Chrome OS 72 or 73.
