Where's new Fitbit smartwatch? Google points to Pixel Watch 3
Three years after acquiring Fitbit, Google has unveiled a strategic shift in its wearables strategy. During the recent 'Made by Google' event, where the Pixel Watch 3 was launched, the company confirmed that Fitbit will no longer produce smartwatches. Instead, the brand will focus on developing minimalistic and long-lasting activity trackers. This move comes after Google released three Pixel smartwatches since 2021, while Fitbit's last smartwatch releases, the Sense 2 and Versa 4, date back two years.
Fitbit's last smartwatches remain available
Despite the strategic shift, Fitbit's last smartwatches, the Sense 2 and Versa 4, will remain on sale. A Google representative clarified that "Pixel Watches are our next iteration of smartwatch for Fitbit." Sandeep Waraich, senior director of product management for Pixel Wearables, further explained this move by stating that users prefer discreet trackers with longer battery life and a simple experience. He expressed pride in Fitbit's Inspire line of trackers.
Google and Fitbit's collaboration on Pixel watches
Waraich highlighted the collaboration between Google and Fitbit in developing Pixel watches. He praised Google's expertize in machine learning and advanced models, which were not readily available externally. Conversely, Fitbit contributed its deep understanding of data and signal capture to the project. Waraich emphasized that Fitbit's integration into devices like the Pixel Watch is not merely an app but is deeply integrated at a system level.
Fitbit's future in the health tracking market
Despite the shift in product focus, both the Fitbit app and Fitbit Premium will continue to exist for users seeking simple health tracking solutions. Waraich sees a "tremendous opportunity in terms of going from tracking to coaching, real-time guidance included." The Pixel Watch 3 offers AI-generated customized workouts for Fitbit Premium users based on their activity and recovery. This feature is seen as a more suitable use of AI and a justifiable reason for charging for it.
