Google is rolling out 'theft detection lock' to some users
Google unveiled a new set of anti-theft features for Android 15 at this year's I/O conference. These included theft detection lock, offline device lock, and the ability to lock your device remotely. The tech giant is currently rolling out the theft detection lock, initially to a select group of beta users in Brazil. This decision was influenced by substantial user feedback regarding the high rate of smartphone theft in the country, as reported by Mishaal Rahman via Droid Life.
How does the feature work?
The theft detection lock is designed to activate when it detects that a phone is being stolen, effectively securing the device. This feature employs various smartphone sensors to prevent unauthorized access before it occurs. It's part of a broader anti-theft initiative by Google that also includes an offline device lock and remote locking capabilities.

Additional anti-theft features and AI integration
In addition to the theft detection lock, Google's remote lock feature allows users to secure their data by remotely locking or erasing their device after verifying their identity on any connected device. Furthermore, the offline device lock automatically secures the phone if someone attempts to keep it offline for an extended period. These systems are powered by advanced AI that identifies potential theft through suspicious patterns like sudden movements or unusual network activity.
Theft detection lock coming to older Android versions
The theft detection lock is a significant component of the privacy and security enhancements in the latest Android version. Google intends to extend this automated anti-theft function beyond Android 15, making it available on older versions as well. As per Rahman, Google aims to bring this feature to all devices running Android 10 or newer through a Google Play Services update.
Anti-theft measures to launch globally
Google plans a global rollout of these anti-theft measures, including in the US. While no specific release dates have been announced yet, it's evident that Google is taking active steps to safeguard user data and devices from theft.
