Waiting for Android 15? Google delays release to this month
Google has announced a delay in the release of its next operating system, Android 15. The tech giant has confirmed that the stable release of Android 15 is still over a month away. The information was revealed in release notes for the Android Beta Exit update, spotted by Android Authority. According to the message, "If you're waiting for the Android 15 stable update, please ignore this OTA till Android 15 is available in October."
Android 15's source code to be available next week
Android Authority has also reported that the source code for Android 15 will be made available to independent Android platform developers next week. This is a significant development as traditionally, the source code and Pixel update are released simultaneously. However, with Android 12, there was a gap of 15 days between these two events, marking an unusual departure from this norm.
Android 15 to be first available on Pixel devices
Once launched, Android 15 will initially be available on Pixel devices starting from the Pixel 6 series. The update will also extend to a broad range of Pixel models including the Pixel 8 series and the newly launched Pixel 9 series, which ship with last year's Android 14 firmware. Several other smartphone manufacturers have also joined the Android beta program, indicating that their devices may soon receive this update.
Android 15 to introduce new features and enhancements
Android 15 is set to introduce several new features, including private spaces or apps secured with an additional passcode, an anti-theft lock that automatically detects if someone snatches your phone from your hand, more secure phone calls, AR in Google Maps, and integration with third-party trackers with Find My Device. The update also aims to enhance user privacy by introducing a new Privacy Sandbox for developers that restricts data access and tracking.
Android 15 to offer performance optimization and advanced camera extensions
For developers, Android 15 will include advanced camera extensions for better hardware integration and a performance optimization framework. This new framework is designed to improve thermal, CPU, and GPU management. These enhancements aim to provide a smoother user experience and allow developers to create more efficient apps on the platform.
Android 15 to introduce new user features
On the user side, Android 15 will offer features like archiving infrequently used apps to save storage space, enhanced Braille display support in TalkBack, and new security measures such as end-to-end encryption for contact keys. Other updates include edge-to-edge display for apps, expanded data types in Health Connect, and the ability to share specific app windows with partial screen sharing. These features aim to improve accessibility and security for all users.
