Google Play Store now allows concurrent app downloads, installations
Google has rolled out a feature that allows concurrent downloads and installations of apps via the Play Store. This enhancement, which has been sporadically tested over the last few years, is seen as a significant upgrade in user experience. Users can now simultaneously install two large apps, such as Google Docs and Sheets, either within the Play Store or directly from their device's home screen.
Concurrent downloads limited to new app installations
At present, the concurrent download feature is limited to new app installations, and can only manage two apps at a time. If a third app is queued for download, it will remain in "Pending" status until one of the first two apps completes its process. This feature does not yet apply to app updates, which occur more frequently than new installs. However, Google may expand this functionality in the future.
This will be useful in new Android device setup
Google Play's concurrent download feature differs from Apple's App Store, which can handle three simultaneous downloads and installations. The new feature will be particularly useful for new Android device setup. This change has been observed on multiple Pixel phones and tablets running Android 14, and version 40.6.31 of the Play Store.
