Google Pixel 4's camera may feature a 16MP telephoto lens
In a strange move last month, Google shared the first image of its upcoming Pixel 4 flagship smartphone, confirming the presence of dual rear cameras and a brand new design language. And now, some software digging by the guys at XDA-Developers and 9to5Google suggest that the next-generation Pixel phone might feature a 16MP telephoto lens. Here's everything to know.
Google Camera code reveals presence of a rear telephoto sensor
XDA-Developers has examined the Google Camera app version 6.3 wherein they spotted changes made to Google Camera's Super Res Zoom feature. In the source code, they found references to new sensor IDs including a "rear telephoto" sensor. Now, considering Pixel 3 has a single standard lens, we think Google is adding support for this telephoto sensor that may feature on the Pixel 4.
Pixel 4 will also feature a front IR sensor
Further, the report also mentions the presence of a new sensor ID named "front IR". So, assuming IR stands for Infrared, we expect this sensor to bring support for "Face authentication" feature that was uncovered in the latest Android Q Beta 4 update.
The telephoto sensor could offer 16MP resolution
The developers at 9to5Google have also examined the code and discovered some text to reveal the resolution of Pixel 4's telephoto lens. They have spotted a possible error message: "Telephoto image has dimensions ( ), but should have dimensions 4656×3496, 4656×3492 or 2328×1748." Hence, going by the resolution values mentioned in the code, we think that the telephoto lens will offer 16MP images.

Meanwhile, like other flagships of 2019, the upcoming Pixel 4 series will be powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. Further, we expect to see upto 8GB RAM, upto 256GB of storage, QHD+ AMOLED displays, Active Edge sensors, and bigger batteries. On the software side, the upcoming flagships will debut the revamped Google Assistant as well as the latest Android Q mobile platform.
