Google Photos introduces new feature to check storage saver eligibility
Google Photos is rolling out a new feature that enables users to identify if an image is unsuitable for the Storage saver. This update comes as a response to user feedback, addressing confusion over why certain photos continued to back up in their original file size. The Storage saver compresses pictures to 16MP, which Google states is suitable for "good quality prints up to 24x16in."
Certain image formats are ineligible
The Storage saver feature is unable to compress JPEG Multi-Picture Format, also known as MPF, with the file extension .mpo. Google identifies portraits on Android devices as an example of this format. It has also been noted that Ultra HDR images fall into this category. These specific formats still back up in their original size due to their incompatibility with the Storage saver's compression capabilities.
How to check image eligibility for Storage Saver
To determine if an image is ineligible for the Storage saver, users can follow a simple process. They need to open the Google Photos app, select a photo or video, swipe up, and under "Details," they will find "Not eligible for Storage saver." This feature provides clarity on which images are not suitable for compression by the Storage saver.
