Foldable display device with multiple pages: Google's latest patent
Thanks to foldable displays, leading OEMs have already embarked on this journey to change the future of our smartphones, televisions, laptops, and smartwatches. And now, joining the elite club is Google which has patented a "foldable display device with multiple pages" - a totally new approach to what we have seen till date. Here's more on this.
About Google's patent
Late last year, Google filed a patent with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) for a "foldable display device with multiple pages" and it was published on June 27, 2019. The patent describes the concept as a foldable computing device that looks just like a book and has several "pages" (OLED screens) that can be turned over.
The device can have a plurality of display pages
The patent reveals a computing device with a "plurality of display pages" that are held together by a hinged spine - just as one would see on a regular book. The spine panel of the device will be used to house components, such as the memory and processor while the back may hold the camera and battery.
What are the use cases of this design?
Indeed, it is a pretty unique design that offers a whole bunch of new applications compared to the folding phones that we have seen so far. However, the most relevant use case that comes to mind is that of an e-reader wherein the text will be spread over multiple pages (displays) and you will physically turn over a page to read.
When can we see a device like this?
While a patent filing doesn't guarantee that a product is in the works, it certainly does weigh in on the idea of a possibility. Will Google ever release a phone like this? We don't know. But surely, the patent is a good indication that the company is working on new designs and applications as it aims to venture into this futuristic form-factor.
