Google One VPN service to shut down on June 20
Google has officially announced the discontinuation of its Google One VPN service, which will take effect from June 20, 2024. The tech giant had previously hinted at this shutdown in April, stating that the VPN would cease operations in the coming months. This decision comes nearly four years after the service was first rolled out in October 2020.
Google provides uninstallation instructions
Google is assisting users in transitioning away from the soon-to-be-discontinued VPN service. The company has provided detailed instructions on how to uninstall the VPN from macOS and Windows systems, as well as how to remove the VPN profile on Android and iOS devices. Users are advised to deactivate the VPN from within the Google One app under the Benefits tab.
Google Fi continues VPN service, Pixel updates incoming
Despite the shutdown of Google One VPN, Google Fi will still continue to offer its own VPN service. In addition, an update is planned for Pixel phones that will enhance their built-in VPN functionality. Specifically, Pixel 7, 7a, 7 Pro, and Fold models are set to receive a firmware on June 3, that will introduce a feature called VPN by Google, which is built directly into the operating system.
No impact on Indian users
The discontinuation of Google One VPN will not affect users in India. The company never launched its VPN service here, so these users will not need to uninstall or deactivate any services related to the Google One VPN.
