Google Meet's new AI feature takes notes for you
Google Meet has introduced an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) tool named 'Take notes for me.' This feature, powered by Gemini AI, is designed to generate summaries of crucial points during video calls. Instead of providing a verbatim transcription, it focuses on recording significant discussion points in a Google Doc. The generated document will be stored in the meeting owner's Google Drive and can be automatically shared with participants or added to the calendar event post-call.
Gemini AI: A tool for Google Workspace customers
The new note-taking feature will initially be available to Google Workspace customers who have the Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, and AI Meetings & Messaging add-ons. Currently, its use is restricted to English language and can only be used on computers or laptops. The document created by this feature may also contain links to the meeting recording and transcript if these options are activated.
Google's AI tool aids latecomers and accessibility needs
The 'Take notes for me' feature also offers a summary of missed discussions for those who join the meeting late, eliminating the need for repetition. This functionality was first announced at Google's 2023 Cloud Next conference. Additionally, it serves as an accessibility tool for individuals who struggle with processing spoken language and taking notes simultaneously, allowing them to stay more engaged during meetings without requesting repetitions.
Rollout and accuracy concerns of Google's new feature
Google plans to complete the rollout of this feature to all Google Workspace customers by September 10. However, the company has cautioned that the accuracy of Google Meet's new tool is not guaranteed. Users may still need to verify the automatically generated notes and make necessary corrections. Despite potential accuracy issues, there is optimism that Google Meet will outperform as a note-taker than transcriber.
