Google Meet's automatic framing feature now available for all users
Google Meet has expanded the availability of its automatic framing feature to all users. The feature was previously exclusive to Google Workspace accounts since 2022. It is designed to automatically position users in the center of the screen during video calls, eliminating the need for manual camera adjustments. The update aims to enhance user experience by correcting awkward camera angles and maintaining a consistent frame throughout calls.
How to use the automatic framing feature
While the automatic framing feature is enabled by default, users can disable it as well. All they have to do is click on the three-dot menu before joining a call, select "Apply visual effects," and click "Appearance." This way, they can customize their video call experience as per their liking.
Google Meet's framing feature vs Apple's Center Stage
Google Meet's automatic framing feature is similar to Apple's Center Stage, but with a key difference. While Apple's version tracks users as they move to keep them in frame, Google's doesn't. This distinction is aimed at minimizing distractions during meetings by keeping a stable frame. However, Google does allow users to manually reposition themselves during a call by hovering over their video tile and clicking "reframe."
Automatic framing with virtual backgrounds
When you use virtual backgrounds on Google Meet, the automatic framing feature works a little differently. Here, it keeps the user centered at all times to avoid the background from reframing. This way, you remain in focus and your selected virtual background remains the same throughout the video call.
