Some Google Maps users are reporting missing location history
What's the story
A recent change by Google in December has resulted in a problem for some Google Maps users.
The tech giant introduced on-device Timeline location history, and now, some are reporting that their Timeline is mysteriously missing.
The issue appears as a "No visits for this day" message when attempting to access the Timeline from the mobile account menu.
Data loss
Users' location history seemingly erased
The issue has been observed across all dates checked, with users' Google Maps Timeline seemingly missing.
The problem continues even for those who switched to the on-device location history as per Google's instructions and haven't enabled auto-delete on their accounts.
Despite "Timeline is on" being displayed at the corner of the map, nothing from today is visible.
Privacy enhancement
Google Maps transition to on-device storage
Back in 2023, Google announced its decision to move Maps location history from cloud storage to on-device storage.
The move is intended to improve user privacy by preventing Google from responding to geofence warrants.
Users have until June 9 to comply with this new setup process or risk losing their data permanently.
Data accessibility
Backup and transfer system available for new devices
While there's a backup and transfer system for users getting new devices, those facing data loss today cannot access this backup, with "delete" being the only option.
It is still unclear how widespread this issue is among Google Maps users, or if the location history data has been deleted or it's just a display bug.
