Google kills feature which allowed Uber booking via Google Maps
Google has silently pulled the plug on a feature that allowed Android users to book Uber cabs directly from Google Maps. The tech giant had introduced this feature for both Android and iOS users at the start of 2017, and had killed the iOS feature last year itself. The reason behind pulling the plug isn't known yet. Here's more.
How the ride sharing feature worked on Google Maps
In January 2017, Google introduced the ride hailing feature in Google Maps. The feature would offer ride sharing tab when a user sought directions from point A to point B on the Google Maps app. The tab is still there, but cabs can't be booked through it - Google shows you estimated fares, but redirects you to the Uber app when you try booking.
The possible reasons behind removing the feature
The reasons behind killing the feature could be manifold. Recently, Google's parent, Alphabet, led a $1bn investment in Uber-rivals Lyft. Google also shared a tumultuous relationship with Uber - earlier this year, Google-owned Waymo settled a trade secrets dispute with Uber. There's also a chance that Uber wanted more users on its app. Either way, you now have to use Uber's app for bookings.
