Google Maps now finally works offline on Wear OS smartwatches
Google Maps has finally introduced the offline maps feature for its Wear OS app, two years after initially announcing plans to do so. The new feature was first spotted by 9to5Google in version 11.140.0701.W of Google Maps for Wear OS, running on a Pixel Watch 2. It is expected that this update will eventually be rolled out to all Wear OS smartwatches, including older models like the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and new launches such as Google Pixel Watch 3.
User experience with the new feature
Upon updating, users will be notified about the availability of offline maps and informed that these maps are auto-downloaded. The "Offline maps" option can be found toward the end of the main list in the app, just above "Settings." Google Maps will automatically download the map for your region and any other maps previously downloaded on your smartphone app.
A step toward efficient navigation
The app notes that maps are only synced or downloaded when the smartwatch is connected to Wi-Fi and charging, addressing potential concerns about battery drain. Users can also see how much storage each downloaded area occupies and delete it with a single tap. An option labeled "Manage on phone" allows adjustments on a larger screen. When using offline maps, a slashed cloud icon appears at the top of the smartwatch screen, indicating that the device is operating in offline mode.
