Google Maps introduces wheelchair accessible routes
Google Maps has introduced a new feature called 'wheelchair accessible routes' that will help users with mobility needs to easily navigate around a place. With this, people in wheelchairs can use Google Maps to get directions that are catered specifically to them. The move is aimed at being more inclusive and making public transit easier for everyone.
Here's how you can find wheelchair accessible routes
To access the new feature, users can enter their destination on Google Maps, tap on the Directions tab, and then select the public transportation icon. Then under Options, they will find the Routes section, where they can choose 'wheelchair accessible' as a new route type. Once done, Google Maps will change directions in accordance with possible routes that take mobility needs into consideration.
The feature has debuted in cities like Boston, London, Tokyo
Currently, Google Maps is debuting the new feature in major metropolitan areas and cities including Boston, New York, London, Tokyo, Mexico City, and Sydney. This was done with the help of transit agencies that cataloged the best wheelchair-accessible routes for Google Maps. The feature can also come in handy if you're on crutches or pushing a stroller.
Google Maps working with transit agencies to find more routes
"We're looking forward to working with additional transit agencies in the coming months to bring more wheelchair accessible routes to Google Maps," Google Product Manager Rio Akasaka said, adding that local contributors have also played an important part in mapping out such routes.
