Meet Vids: Google's new AI-powered video creation app for corporates
Google has announced the launch of Google Vids, an innovative video creation application powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Set for release in June, this tool is designed to revolutionize corporate presentations. The app employs Gemini, Google's most advanced AI model, to create videos specifically tailored for the workplace. Users simply provide a prompt and relevant documents, images, and videos for the app, to generate a comprehensive storyboard, script, music, and voiceover.
A comprehensive tool for corporate storytelling
Google Vids aims to transform every user into a compelling storyteller. In a blog post, Google Vice President Aparna Pappu described the app as "your video, writing, production, and editing assistant, all in one." She highlighted the ubiquity of video as a storytelling medium and its ability to 'cut through the noise,' while acknowledging that creating videos can be daunting for beginners. With Google Vids, users are provided with an accessible platform to start their video creation journey.
Google VIDs showcased at Cloud Next conference
The capabilities of Google Vids were demonstrated at Google's Cloud Next conference in Las Vegas. The app offers various templates for videos such as research proposal, new employee introduction, team milestone or quarterly business update. It crafts an initial version of the video filled with storyboards, stock media, music transitions, and animation. Additionally, it creates a script and voiceover that users can replace with their own recordings if they prefer.
Complementing, not superseding existing tools
Google Vids is not intended to replace AI-backed video generation tools like OpenAI's upcoming Sora or Runway's Gen-2, which generate videos from text prompts from scratch. Instead, it uses AI to understand prompts and merge stock images, music transitions, videos, and animations into an enhanced slide deck. This positioning clarifies the app's unique role in the market as a tool that leverages AI to facilitate corporate storytelling rather than creating content entirely from scratch.
Facilitating real-time collaboration
Kristina Behr, Google's VP of Product Management for the Workspace collaboration apps, emphasized that if users can make a slide, they can make a video in Vids. She highlighted that video production skills are not required to use the app. Furthermore, Behr pointed out that Google Vids facilitates real-time collaboration, similar to other Google Workspace tools like Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This feature allows multiple users to work together on a single project simultaneously.
