You can save mobile data using this app from Google!

    What's the story

Google has launched a new Android app that helps users understand, monitor, and save mobile data usage.

"Datally" app lets users control mobile data usage. It is aimed at netizens in the developing countries, like India, where mobile Internet packages are expensive.

It helps users stay under their data plan limits. Datally is part of the tech giant's Next Billion Users initiative.

    Here's more!

No need to worry about data usage

Caesar Sengupta, Vice-President of Next Billion Users Team, stated: "Mobile data is expensive for many people around the world. And what's worse, it's hard to figure out where it all goes. That's why we built Datally...you can save more and do more with your data."

    Details

Cut down data usage based on app activity

Google Product Manager Josh Woodward said Datally shows apps' data consumption and allows users to turn off their data transmissions as per their choice.

Users can see which apps are using data the most and at what time. Datally also suggests ways to reduce data usage based on user activity.

It also provides a list of nearby Wi-Fi networks along with user ratings.

    Features

Know where your mobile data is going

Datally allows users to stop all background data usage so that only the current, onscreen app can use data.

If they don't wish to block every app from using background data, it can be done on an individual basis, too.

Activating Data Saver Bubble would show the currently running app's data usage; users can block the app if the usage goes out of control.

    Standalone App

Datally features already built into Android

While Datally is a simple and useful app, some users may not really find it that exciting as most of its functions are already available on Android devices.

Such features can be accessed in Settings but most users cannot understand them easily.

However, with this standalone app, Google is only making such data saving features easy to understand and use.

    Quote

    Users could save 30% data

Sengupta said: "We've been testing Datally in the Philippines for the past few months, and people are saving up to 30% on their data. We're excited to make Datally globally available on the Google Play Store for all phones running Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and higher."

    Concerns

Concerns about effects of limited data access

Woodward admitted some Datally functionality is available within Android devices' settings, but the app would help users understand the options better.

He added app developers from Google, and third-party apps were concerned about Datally's impact regarding users limiting data access to their services.

However, after seeing that users liked the concept of "data consumption by apps they like," the developers welcomed the idea.
