Google's testing a new 'Explore' feature for Chrome: Details here

    What's the story

Google appears to be testing a new feature called 'Explore' on Chrome's Android app.

The feature, first spotted by Android Police, brings changes into the new tab page of the browser, giving users more set of options to explore content.

Most interestingly, it can be tried by Android users right away.

    Here are the finer details.

    Details

    Several categories with pre-listed websites

As Android Police reported, the experimental feature provides users with a bunch of "channels" or categories to browse websites of their interest, more easily.

On the new tab page, only three categories appear under the 'Explore' head, but users can access the 'More Categories' option to see all the channels, including those for entertainment, jobs, news, travel, and more.

    Test feature specifics

Eight websites listed under each category

In the test iteration of Explore, as many as eight related websites appeared under each category.

Most of them looked suited for India-specific users, but that doesn't mean the feature would be exclusive to Indians.

Google could be suggesting suitable websites by considering browsing habits of the user or the location of their device, which appears to be India in this case.

    Steps to try

Here's how you can try 'Explore'

The feature looks pretty interesting and can be tried right away - even without installing the beta version of Chrome for Android.

Just open the browser (stable version), go to 'chrome://flags' and search for 'Explore websites'.

This will take you to the designated flag for the feature.

Enable it, restart the browser, and you'll start seeing the 'Explore' interface.

    Information

No word when it might get official

Though the feature is in the testing phase, it is worth noting there's also a possibility it is never rolled-out publicly. Google tests a number of features every year, but many of those are also ditched due to one or another reason.
