#SecurityCheckKiya: Google launches safety initiative in India
Google has launched a new public safety initiative in India called #SecurityCheckKiya. The initiative aims at protecting web and Android users from malicious apps, losing personal data, and account hijacking. The campaign, which is directed at first-time internet users who gain easy access to the web but lack technical literacy, comes in the light of Safer Internet Day celebrated globally on February 6.
Web users can get Google account scanned for security bugs
Under this, web users can log on to g.co/securitycheckup to get a clear security status of their Google accounts. If the security tool shows a green check mark, the account is safe, but if it shows a yellow or red exclamation point, there is at least one security issue that needs rectification. It scans your account and also provides personalized recommendations to strengthen security.
Android users can ensure security through Google Play Protect
Next, Android users can enable Google Play Protect to safeguard their devices from malicious apps. The security software scans a device and checks it for any harmful malware or apps, before and after they are installed. According to Sunita Mohanty, Director of Trust and Safety, Google, the company took down over 7 lakh apps from Google Play Store in 2017 alone.
Users who lose their device can also ensure account security
In the event of losing an Android device, users can ensure that all their personal data is secure by downloading Google's 'Find My Device' app. The app will not only help users locate a lost Android device, but also keep the information inside it secure. Further, these Google security tools will keep evolving in line with new threats, and provide up-to-date security services.
Google wants everyone to be aware and ask #SecurityCheckKiya
Talking about the security initiative, Google said, "Just like we are asked before stepping out of the house, 'main door lock Kiya?'; on interacting with unknown people, 'strangers se baat toh nahi kiya?'; it's now upon us to ask everyone internet pe #SecurityCheckKiya."
