Gemini gets 'Canvas' to help you code better—just like ChatGPT
What's the story
Google's AI assistant, Gemini, has received an update with two new features: Canvas and Audio Overviews.
The Canvas feature brings a workspace into the AI where you can create and refine documents as well as code in real-time—just like ChatGPT's Canvas feature.
This way, you can draft initial documents or code and collaborate with Gemini to edit certain sections, adjust tone, or reformat content as required.
For coding projects, it provides a live preview with the code for iterative editing.
Podcasting function
Gemini's Audio Overview feature transforms written content
The second feature, Audio Overview, aims to convert written material like documents or slides into a "podcast-style discussion between two AI hosts."
The capability was previously integrated into Google's NotebookLM. However, it has now found its way into Gemini after the NotebookLM team left in December to start their own venture.
Both Audio Overview and Canvas are being globally rolled out today for Gemini and Gemini Advanced subscribers.
Language support
Audio Overview currently supports only English
Currently, the Audio Overview feature is available only in English, but Google has promised more language support in future updates.
The move comes as a response to similar features offered by AI competitors like Anthropic and OpenAI.
Last week, Google updated Gemini with a new feature called Gemini with Personalization. It lets users link their search history with the AI assistant to enhance the quality of responses generated by the chatbot.
