Google Maps' missing location history fixed: How to restore data
What's the story
Google has fixed a bug in its Maps Timeline feature that caused location history to disappear for some users earlier this month.
The problem, which caused missing visits and routes since early March, was acknowledged by Google.
The tech giant said it "briefly experienced a technical issue that caused the deletion of Timeline data for some people."
Restoration
Restoration process initiated for affected users
For those affected by this glitch, Google has restored the functionality of the Maps Timeline feature (not enabled by default). It should now be properly recording new visits.
The company also said that "nearly" all users who have activated "encrypted Timeline backups will be able to restore their data." However, some may find it difficult.
To restore their data, they have to update to the latest version of Maps on Android or iOS devices.
Steps
Steps to restore data from encrypted backups
To restore their information, users will have to head over to "Your Timeline" from the account menu and tap on the cloud icon.
From there, they will have to choose a device/backup from the list and click on the three-dot icon for "Import," following further instructions from Google.
However, those who didn't have backups enabled won't be able to recover lost data.
This backup system was introduced when Google switched its approach to prioritizing user privacy.
Commitment
Google assures improvements in future systems
Google has started emailing Maps users with Timeline enabled, giving them these restoration instructions. "We understand this can be frustrating if you use Timeline to remember places you've visited, and we are taking steps to improve our systems for the future," a Google spokesperson said.
