Google Chrome is getting new 'Sneak Peek' capability: Details here

    What's the story

Google Chrome for Android is getting a handy new feature called 'Sneak Peek'.

The capability will let you open links on the same tab of the browser, thereby saving you from the trouble of opening pages in new tabs.

It is not available in the stable version of Chrome but can be used on the Dev and Canary versions right away.

    Here's more.

    Use

Sneak peek would open links in an overlay

Typically, Chrome users long-press a link and hit the 'Open in new tab' option to see its content.

The process is easy but can prove annoying when the opened link is of no use and you have to go back to the original tab.

'Sneak Peek' solves this hassle by loading this tab in the form of an overlay on the same tab.

    Overlay benefit

    Where this overlay would appear?

The new link overlay opened with 'Sneak Peek' would be placed at the bottom of the page.

This way, you'd be able to pull it up on the same tab to browse through the link's content, fill a form or make quick purchases.

Once done, you can hit the close button or pull the overlay down to go back to the original tab's content.

    Information

Here's how you can use this feature

The process of using Sneak Peek is similar to opening a new tab. You'll have to long-press a link, but then, instead of tapping on 'Open in new tab', you'll have to hit the '*New* Sneak Peek' option in the long-press menu.

    Availability

However, not everyone can use it at present

Sneak Peek is only available for those using the Canary or Dev versions of Google Chrome for Android.

To start using it, head over to chrome://flags and enable the feature by searching for 'Sneak'.

Then, relaunch the browser and long-press any link to find the 'Sneak Peek' option.

Hopefully, the stable version of the browser would also get the same capability very soon.
