Google Play Store celebrates Women's Day by highlighting female developers
Google is celebrating International Women's Day (March 8) by highlighting games and apps created by women developers on the Google Play Store. So starting this week, users will see a collection of apps, games, movies, and TV shows on the Play Store which either have women behind them or have strong female leads in them. Here is more on it.
Google has also partnered with female YouTube gamers
In terms of games, the Play Store will highlight titles like Inkle's 80 Days, Temple Gates Games's Race for the Galaxy, Landshark Games's Zen Koi 2, and State of Play's Kami 2. Google has also partnered with female YouTube creators like OMGItsFireFoxx, CyberNova, Rosanna Pansino, and Gloom to create short behind-the-scene stories about how they started gaming. These will be published starting March 8.
Movies like Wonder Woman and Frida to be highlighted too
Other apps that will be featured on the Google Play Store include women's health tracker Clue, Arabic social network Abjjad, graphic design app Canva, podcast curation app CastBox, and Habitica, an app that turns your day-to-day tasks into a game to help you be more productive. Media content with strong female leads like Wonder Woman, Frida, and Girls will also be promoted.
Only 30% female gamers feel games are made for them
Earlier, a Google study found out that roughly half of the total mobile gamers were female. It also stated that 43% of female gamers played more than five days a week, compared to only 38% of male gamers that played over five days a week. Despite that, only 30% of female gamers felt that games were made for them.
Google's efforts to highlight female gamers and developers
Last year, Google also launched the Change the Game initiative, which aims at raising the visibility of women both making and playing games. It features games by women developers and starring women protagonists.
