Google Messages for Android gets Gemini-powered features
Google has announced the widespread release of the Gemini feature in its messaging application, Google Messages, following its initial announcement at I/O 2024. It's worth noting that the Gemini feature has been available to beta users since March this year. This new addition comes after recent launches such as Gemini 1.5 Pro in Gemini Advanced and the YouTube Music Gemini Extension. Once activated, users will find Gemini as their first contact in the Start chat FAB > New conversation list.
Functionality and user interface
Upon agreeing to certain terms, users are directed to a standard messaging interface that includes an emoji and a gallery in the text box. The feature allows users to upload images for the prompt but does not support audio memos. According to Google, Gemini can be used to "draft messages, brainstorm ideas, plan events, or simply have a fun conversation."
Unique features and limitations
Gemini offers a direct 1:1 conversation that cannot be integrated into other conversations, unlike the Assistant in Google Allo. It supports Gemini Extensions such as Workspace (@Gmail, etc.), @YouTube, and @GoogleMaps. However, the YouTube Music extension tool isn't available in Gemini in Google Messages. Users can leave feedback by long-pressing on a response to give thumbs up/down. Ability to star and forward are also available.
Accessibility and rollout
Conversations on Gemini occur over RCS and must be generally enabled, but they are not end-to-end encrypted. Notably, Gemini cannot be accessed using messages.google.com/web or the Wear OS app. The rollout of Gemini in Google Messages is happening globally, with exceptions for the European Economic Area, the UK, Switzerland, and India. The feature supports English and French languages in Canada.
