Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ arriving in February; Some specs are disappointing
Samsung's much-awaited Galaxy S9, S9+ are expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress-2018 in Barcelona next month. Meanwhile, fresh leaks have almost "confirmed" some of the S9 duo's specs and design. SlashLeaks says S9 and S9+ will have 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries, respectively, just like their predecessors. Apart from the battery, several specs remain unchanged while others just don't meet expectations. Here's a sneak peek.
Battery details spotted on certification website
With only weeks before the rumored launch, SlashLeaks spotted Galaxy S9 and S9+ certifications on Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency website. The certificates suggest Samsung isn't changing the battery capacities of the S9 series from its S8 series. The website, however, didn't reveal any other specs.
What are the smartphones expected to offer?
Based on numerous rumors/leaks, Galaxy S9 is expected to feature a 5.8-inch AMOLED Infinity Display while the bigger S9+ would sport a 6.2-inch display. They might come with 12MP front and 16MP dual rear cameras and have an IP65/68-rating for water and dust resistance. Both the smartphones would be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (the US) or Exynos 9810 (global markets).
Picture of Galaxy S9 product box leaked online
Meanwhile, another massive leak has reportedly confirmed some significant features of the regular Galaxy S9 smartphone. A Reddit user has posted an image of the S9's retail packaging which revealed specs like the device's RAM, storage, camera features like the variable aperture and a super slow motion, etc. While many features and specs did seem exciting, some are still disappointing.
These specs, features may disappoint many fans!
The retail packaging says S9 will have 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage; it's pretty low considering Note 8 had 6GB RAM. Samsung unveiled 512GB smartphone modules earlier; S9 series was expected to come with 512GB storage. Contrary to previous reports, the box claims there is no dual rear camera on S9. However, some still hope that S9+ will have a dual camera.
No in-display fingerprint sensor; headphone jack absent, too!
A previous report claimed Samsung is working on two S9 prototypes: one with an under-the-screen fingerprint scanner and the other with a rear one. But a recent leak said Samsung is adopting the rear-mounted sensor design. Following the "no-headphone-jack trend" Samsung has also dumped the 3.5mm audio-port on S9/S9+. Also, the retail packaging says there's no FaceID-like facial recognition feature but an iris scanner.
What else does the retail box say?
The Galaxy S9 retail packaging says the device will sport a 5.8-inch QuadHD+ sAMOLED display, an 8MP selfie shooter with auto focus, and come with an IP68 dust and water resistance. All these features were already seen on S9's predecessor Galaxy S8.
Here are some interesting features
According to the information on the retail box, the Galaxy S9 will come with AKG stereo speakers, making it the first Galaxy device to have them. Coming to the camera, the single lens 12MP primary camera will have variable F1.5 - F2.4 aperture, OIS, and also the "Super Slo-Mo" video recording feature. The device will also support wireless charging with the "fast charging" feature.
