What's the story

After a four-year absence, Fortnite is making its return to iOS devices in the European Union (EU). The popular game will be available through a new iPhone version of the Epic Games Store and AltStore PAL, an independent app store. This development comes after years of legal battles between Apple and Epic, as well as changes prompted by the EU's Digital Markets Act.

Global launch

Epic Games Store also debuts on Android

In addition to its iOS debut, the Epic Games Store is also launching globally for Android users. The company has plans to expand its game offerings to Aptoide's iOS store in the EU and the ONE Store on Android. "We look forward to bringing our games to other stores around the world," Epic stated in a blog post, indicating future expansion plans.

CEO statement

CEO expresses gratitude for European DMA law

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney expressed his enthusiasm about the game's return to iOS in Europe. "We're really excited and grateful for the European DMA law," he said during a press briefing. However, users are required to update their iPhones to iOS 17.6 or later to install the Epic Games Store, despite Epic's FAQ stating that it can be installed on iPhones running iOS 17.4 or later.

Information

Fortnite's return coincides with new Marvel-themed season

The relaunch of Fortnite on iOS coincides with the introduction of a new Marvel-themed season. This could potentially attract EU players back to the game on Apple's mobile platform. Sweeney assured that Epic anticipates "absolutely no trouble of being able to update Fortnite simultaneously, worldwide."

Game expansion

Epic Games Store to feature more titles

Alongside Fortnite, European iPhone users and global Android users will have access to Epic's Rocket League Sideswipe and a mobile version of Fall Guys from the Epic Games Store. Despite potential obstacles in Apple's third-party installation process, Epic is aiming for 100 million net new Epic Games Store mobile installations by the end of this year.
