#GamingBytes: Epic Games buys anti-cheat company Kamu
What's the story
Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite, is taking the game security seriously.
It recently acquired a Helsinki based firm, Kamu, that offers game security as well as live service management.
Through this acquisition, Epic is also trying to recruit Finnish service, tech, and engine developers.
Kamu and Epic, together, will fortify the security of Fortnite to ensure the protection of the players.
Here's more.
Kamu
A company with a reputation
Epic chose to acquire Kamu for its reputation.
Its 'Easy Anti-Cheat' tech is already installed in more than 100 million PCs globally and protects players of over 80 games, which includes Fortnite.
It also provides live management of community building, player satisfaction, and game integrity.
Notably, Epic's CEO Tim Sweeney was pleased with the multiplayer experience of Fortnite, which is powered by Kamu's tools.
Promises
The promise Kamu brings to the table
Kamu CEO Simon Allayes said that battling in-game cheating was the beginning. Now, the company is helping developers remain competitive by identifying emerging needs.
It not only promised to help Epic grow but also sustain this growth for Fortnite.
Notably, it recognizes that development and launching of a game is only half the battle, and the hardest part is ensuring sustainable growth.
Security measures
The need for better protection
It was imperative for Epic to step up its security as the massive popularity has attracted hackers and scammers.
Earlier this year, several Fortnite players were scammed into downloading a virus-infected V-Bucks application.
Apart from Kamu's measures, Epic has upped its security by asking players to sign up for a two-step authentication.
It is trying to incentivize gamers by giving out an emote.
