Dark mode for WhatsApp is on the way: Details here
WhatsApp has long been tipped to be working on a dark mode, but now, the feature finally seems to be turning into a reality. Popular tipster WABetaInfo has spotted the dark theme in a recent beta version of WhatsApp for Android. The capability wasn't fully-functional but the development clearly indicates it's nearing an official launch. Here's how the dark mode would work.
'Dark grey' mode seen in action
WABetaInfo, which has a history of reverse engineering of upcoming WhatsApp features, discovered the dark mode after delving into the messaging app's latest beta (version 2.19.82). The feature wasn't enabled but had to be triggered, probably through a flag or preference in the APK. However, once that was done, a dark grey theme (not black and white) took over certain elements of the app.
Only the settings were recolored
The tipster claimed the dark mode only recolored settings of the app, specifically the pages for notification, data and storage, chats, and account settings. However, we believe that's just the current status and the main 'chats' page of the app will also get the dark grey theme. To note, it would be much easier on the eyes compared to the high-contrast black and white.
Plus, you get battery benefits
The grey theme will not just be eye-friendly for easy readability in low-light conditions, it will also improve the battery backup of your device. Dark themes have been known to save power, which is why Google has been pushing the dark mode for Android Q.
Still, there's no timeline for final launch
While I'm definitely into the color scheme chosen by WhatsApp, it's still not clear when the feature will officially be implemented for regular Android users. The company has not given a word on the final roll out, but from what we see, the public availability might not be far. However, before that, the beta users of the app will get to try the feature.
WhatsApp has to match its competitors
Either way, we think WhatsApp should move quickly with this feature if it has to go neck to neck with other messaging services. To note, WhatsApp's popular messaging competitors, including Viber, Telegram, and Android Messages, have already received a dark mode. And, with Android Q getting a system-wide dark theme, not many would like the idea of a bright white version of WhatsApp.
