FDA approves gel that can stop gunshot bleeding in seconds
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given its approval to Traumagel, a groundbreaking gel-based treatment in trauma care. This innovative product is designed to control moderate to severe bleeding within seconds, potentially saving lives in situations involving gunshot or stab wounds. Cresilon, the company behind this medical breakthrough, anticipates that it will be particularly beneficial for military personnel, government health agencies, and emergency medical services.
Traumagel is a plant-based hemostatic gel
Traumagel is a rapidly deployable, plant-based gel designed to stop life-threatening bleeding in seconds. The syringe allows for direct application to the wound. "The ability to rapidly stop bleeding at the point of care and halt a life-threatening hemorrhage can be the difference between life and death for people with traumatic injuries," said Cresilon's CEO, Joe Landolina. The company plans to launch Traumagel in late 2024, packaging it in user-friendly 30ml pre-filled syringes for easy application during emergencies.
Traumagel's versatility and previous FDA approval
The FDA had previously approved a 5ml version of Traumagel for treating minor cuts. The gel has also found use in veterinary medicine, demonstrating its versatility. Cresilon highlighted that traditional methods like gauze bandages are less efficient due to their requirement for preparation and extended application time. In contrast, Traumagel can induce blood clotting without applying pressure on a wound, making it a more effective solution for severe bleeding cases.
Traumagel's potential in trauma-related incidents
Landolina further explained Traumagel's potential, stating that it is suitable for stab wounds, gunshot wounds, and motor vehicle accidents. He emphasized that "really anywhere where this product will stand between a patient and death." This statement underscores the life-saving potential of Traumagel in trauma-related incidents. According to the American Red Cross, approximately 40% of trauma-related deaths worldwide result from bleeding, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatments like Traumagel.
