Facebook asks users' opinion on child pornography on the platform
As part of a survey, Facebook has asked users for their opinions on what should be the company's policy if an adult man "asks a 14-year-old girl for sexual pictures" in a private chat. Facebook reportedly opened the survey to only a portion of its global users, asking them about the right way to handle grooming behavior. Here's more on this rather disturbing survey.
Here's the complete question and its possible answers
Facebook apologizes for the "mistaken" question
Facebook VP of Product Guy Rosen apologized for the survey and described it as a "mistake." "We run surveys to understand how the community thinks about how we set policies. But this kind of activity is and will always be completely unacceptable on FB. We regularly work with authorities if identified. It shouldn't have been part of this survey," he said.
The survey had more than one inappropriate question
Another question in the survey reportedly asked users who should be deciding the rules around an adult man being allowed to ask for such pictures from a minor. Possible responses to this question were Facebook deciding the rules on its own, getting expert advice but still deciding itself, experts telling Facebook what to do, and users deciding the rules by voting and telling Facebook.
We strictly prohibit child grooming: Facebook
Facebook said, "We have prohibited child grooming on Facebook since our earliest days; we have no intention of changing this and we regularly work with the police to ensure that anyone found acting in such a way is brought to justice."
