Are you affected by Facebook data breach? Know more
Starting April 9, Facebook would start notifying users if their data was harvested by Cambridge Analytica. It will also showcase its new bulk app permission removal tool atop News Feeds so that users can better control which third-party apps they want to provide data to. "People will be able to remove apps they no longer want," Facebook said.
Facebook now wants to "protect your information"
Facebook will reach out to all 2.2 billion users with two separate notices, one for those directly affected by the scandal and another for the rest of the user base. Both notices will provide links to apps users have shared their information with and advice on data protection. But the message for affected users will alert them that their data might have been misused.
Will become stricter about activities of third-party apps: Facebook
This comes as part of Facebook's latest announcement where CTO Mike Schoepfer detailed the changes that the company is making to protect user data and become stricter about the activities of third-party apps. Through the notification, users will be able to revoke app access individually or even completely turn off access to third-party apps.
Exact number of affected users is still unclear
Facebook revealed a maximum of 87 million users could have been affected by the scandal with over 70 million being from the US. Cambridge Analytica claims to have data on 30 million users while whistleblower Christopher Wylie claims the number could be over 87 million.
