How Facebook can pair you up with your 'Secret Crush'
Facebook has kicked off its annual developer conference, giving a look at a number of changes it plans to bring into its products. However, among all the new features and redesigns, the thing that drew most of our attention is 'Secret Crush' - a way to help people connect with the Facebook friends they have a crush on. Let's see how it will work.
What is Secret Crush
Secret Crush is a Facebook Dating feature that anyone can use to express their affection for a friend silently. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the company think there's an opportunity to explore romances within friend circles, and that's what this feature aims to do. It will let people reveal their secret crushes, and then make matches if the feeling is mutual.
How Secret Crush works
Facebook keeps Dating profiles separate from main profiles to save users from the awkwardness of letting friends and family members know about their dating account. However, with Secret Crush, you can add the friend you secretly crush on in a list within your dating account. The list will remain completely private and you can choose up to nine friends you may feel attracted towards.
So, how this will be useful
Adding a secret crush is just one part; if the friend you secretly admire is on Facebook Dating, they will be notified that someone has a crush on them. Facebook won't reveal you have added them on your list, but if they opt into the same feature and add you into their own 'Secret Crush' list, the service will match the two accounts automatically.
No need to worry about rejection
Facebook has specifically mentioned that no one will ever see your crush list or know that you are their secret admirer unless the feeling is mutual. So, put simply, this feature can help you confess your affection for a friend without worrying about rejection. And, if they like you back, you both can start talking on Messenger and date.
Notably, Indians can't use this feature
Facebook Dating comes as a part of the main Facebook app and is free to use. There are no ads and any person aged above 18 can create their dating profile with a little more information for matches. It works like Hinge, where the conversation starts from on-profile content, but do note that the service isn't available for Indians, at least not yet.
Where Facebook Dating is available
Facebook Dating has been active in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Canada, and Thailand, and just recently, the company announced its expansion to 14 more regions, including Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, and Suriname.
