Jio developing cloud-based PC for AI applications: What's special?
What's the story
Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Reliance Industries, is working on a cloud-based "personal computer" (PC).
The futuristic device will allow users to run high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
The announcement was made by Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani during a fireside chat at Mumbai Tech Week 2025.
Ambani also revealed that the upcoming cloud-based PC will be "device agnostic," meaning it will work with all consumer PC brands.
Tech innovation
Jio's cloud-based PC: A device-agnostic solution
Ambani described the PC as a "complete PC in the cloud" which can be accessed from anywhere and doesn't require any hardware. This innovative approach will let you develop high-performance AI applications using Jio's extensive network reach.
Strategy
Approach to democratize AI solutions
Ambani stressed that Jio's "platform approach" is designed to democratize access to its AI solutions for millions of users in India at affordable costs.
He also announced JioBrain, an upcoming "machine learning-as-a-service" for businesses.
The service would save companies from investing in expensive infrastructure to develop AI apps, further lowering the entry barriers in the AI space.
Expansion
Ambitious growth plans for its operating system
Along with its cloud-based PC and AI services, Jio has also set an ambitious target of reaching 100 million users for its JioTele OS.
The operating system, which is designed to connect smart TVs, will be aimed at hitting this target in the shortest possible time.
The company plans to use this platform as a launchpad for developers to reach consumers and deploy India-first solutions.
AI future
Jio's investment in AI
Ambani also highlighted the importance of AI as one of the most important technological revolutions of our time.
He believes this tech could potentially drive India's growth at double-digit rates for years to come.
However, he also emphasized the need for hardware infrastructure, research and development (R&D), and talent to position India as a leader in the AI space.
Workforce transformation
Jio's AI team and its impact on the job market
Ambani revealed that Jio has invested in a full-stack AI team, which includes over a thousand employees, including data scientists, researchers, and engineers.
He warned that companies that don't adopt AI and reinvent their operations with this technology have an uncertain future ahead.
Speaking on AI's impact on employment, Ambani assured that while AI will transform jobs, it won't eliminate them entirely.
