This humanoid robot leverages OpenAI's ChatGPT for natural speech
Figure, a US-based company, has unveiled its latest creation - the Figure 02 humanoid robot. This model is an upgrade from the previous Figure 01 model introduced in 2023. The development of Figure 02 was facilitated by a strategic partnership with OpenAI, which also contributed to the firm's $675 million Series B funding round in February. The robot is outfitted with OpenAI's ChatGPT for its natural speech capabilities. Doing so helps humans instruct it, and provide transparency about its activities.
A breakthrough in factory operations
The Figure 02 is specifically designed to work alongside human colleagues on a factory floor, once necessary safety measures are in place. The robot is equipped with speakers and microphones for effective communication with people at work. This feature is particularly crucial for humanoid robots that are designed to operate freely without a safety cage, enhancing their functionality and user interaction.
Advanced features and industry impact
The integration of neural networks has been a significant development in the robotics industry, particularly for humanoid robots. Models like ChatGPT and Google Gemini have been recognized for their natural language capabilities, which enhance smart assistants and chatbots. In addition to speech capabilities, the Figure 02 also features vision and proximity sensors for safety purposes.
Figure 02's unique design and potential applications
The new robot features six RGB cameras, coupled with an onboard visual language model, improved CPU/GPU computing, and better hands with 16-degrees of freedom. Despite some criticism in the industry regarding their delicacy and perceived over-engineering, Figure has committed to using humanlike hands as the system's end effectors. The company has hinted at broader applications beyond the warehouse or factory floor for Figure 02 in the future.
