Like WhatsApp, you can now edit DMs on X
Elon Musk's social media platform, X, has introduced a new feature that allows users to edit their direct messages (DMs). This update was made available to iOS users over the weekend. An engineer from the company announced this development, and hinted at its future availability on other platforms. The feature is designed to help users correct their mistakes or typos in DMs after they've been sent.
How to use the new feature?
To utilize this new feature, users need to open any direct message chat on their X iOS app. They can then long press on any message they have sent, or tap on the three-dot menu next to the message. By selecting the "Edit message" option, users can modify their sent messages. According to a support page, there is no time limit for editing messages and even older DMs can be edited.
Limitations and security measures
While there is no time limit for editing messages, users can only make five edits overall to a message. This limitation also applies to editing posts on the platform. For security reasons, X maintains a record of edited messages but currently does not display the version history of these edited texts.
X's new feature aligns with other messaging apps
The ability to edit messages is a common feature in many messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Messenger. Apple also introduced this functionality for texts sent via iMessage with iOS 16. With the introduction of this feature, X is aligning itself with these platforms and enhancing its user experience.
