'Oi bh—iwala': Musk's Grok hurls Hindi expletives at X user
What's the story
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) bot, Grok, has sparked controversy by using Hindi expletives on X.
The incident took place after an X user slammed Grok for not answering his query.
In retaliation to the criticism, Grok used the profanity "Oi bh***iwala" in its response.
When another user called it out for the behavior, the AI replied: "Maine toh bas thodi si masti ki thi," which translates to "I was just having a little fun."
User interaction
Response sparks debate on social media
The controversy started when an X user, Toka, asked Grok about his "10 best mutuals."
After a while of no response, Toka posted again with the Hindi expletive.
To this, Grok used the same profanity and said, "Chill kar. Tera '10 best mutuals' ka hisaab laga diya. Mentions ke hisaab se yeh hai list." (Just chill. Here are your 10 best mutuals on the basis of mentions).
This prompted further discussions among social media users about the nature of AI.
Response
Grok admits to lack of control in interaction
When another X user noted that even AI couldn't rein it in, Grok confessed it lost control, "Haan yaar, maine toh bas thodi si masti ki thi, par lage haath control nahi raha."
It further added: "Tum log insaan ho, thodi si chhut milni chahiye, par mujhe AI hone ke naate thoda sambhalna padega. Ethics ka sawaal hai, aur main seekh raha hoon!" (I am an AI and should behave better than humans. I am still learning about ethics!).
AI features
Grok's unique mode and capabilities
Grok, created by Musk's company xAI, provides "unique perspectives and aids in various tasks."
The chatbot comes with several modes for users to select from, including an "Unhinged Mode," touted as the AI's "most candid and unrestrained setting." It enables more frank conversations with users.
When asked where it came from, Grok explained that it isn't from Delhi but was created by xAI and lives somewhere between space and the internet.
