Draft rules for data protection law to be released soon
The draft rules for India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA) are set to be unveiled within a month, according to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The minister confirmed that the framework of the DPDPA is now complete. This includes details on how to file complaints, take up appeals, as well as other related procedures.
A year since parliamentary approval
The DPDP Act, India's first legislation aimed at preventing personal data breaches, was approved by the Parliament nearly a year ago. However, its implementation has been delayed due to the need for additional clauses and rules. Reports suggest that the government has now approved these rules for public consultation, which is expected to commence this month.
DPDP Act offers special protections for vulnerable groups
The DPDP Act includes special protections for children and individuals with disabilities. The legislation defines a child as anyone under 18 years of age. Section 9 of the Act stipulates that verification and parental consent are necessary before processing a minor's data. These measures are part of the government's broader effort to safeguard personal information in the digital age.
