DoT to consult TRAI on satcom spectrum allocation and licensing
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to collaborate with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on spectrum allocation and licensing for satellite communication services. This move comes in response to TRAI's consultation paper, "Assignment of Spectrum for Space-based Communication Services," issued on April 6, 2023. The paper was returned to DoT following the introduction of the new Telecommunication Act.
DoT to refine licensing guidelines for satcom services
The DoT is considering refining existing licenses to provide clear guidelines on the services that satellite communication companies can offer. An unnamed source has informed PTI, that the DoT will seek TRAI's perspective on the cost and process for allocating spectrum for space-based communication services. This initiative aims to clarify the offerings of satcom companies with an administratively allocated spectrum.
Satcom licenses granted to OneWeb and Jio Satcom
Satellite communication technology has led to the granting of licenses to Bharti Group-supported OneWeb and Reliance Group's Jio Satcom for GMPCS (satellite telephony) and VSAT services. These companies provide internet access in hard-to-reach areas using satcom technology. However, there are concerns that the existing VSAT license norms may not align with the new Telecommunication Act's stipulations, necessitating modifications.
Starlink eyeing Indian satcom market
Elon Musk's Starlink, with its network of 4,000 low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, has submitted an application to launch satellite communication services in India. A recent report confirms that Starlink is nearing approval from the Indian government for its license application. OneWeb, which operates more than 600 LEO satellites, is also a significant player in the market. The entry of these companies into the Indian market underscores the growing importance and potential of satellite communication services.
