Comcast expands gigabit internet services to Chicago
Comcast launched its gigabit internet services to residents of Chicago on Wednesday, as part of its trial across various cities. The service will enable users to obtain internet speeds of 1 Gbps using a new system called the DOCSIS 3.1, which is used to transmit high speed internet over traditional cable lines. An expensive service, it will charge users $140 a month.

Gigabit internet: What is it?
Gigabit internet is a new technology that has cropped up recently, helping users of broadband internet gain access to high speeds clocking almost 1,000 Mbps or 1 Gbps of broadband service. The high speed would translate to a user gaining access to a connection that is around 100 times faster that the regular broadband network. This is enabled by using glass optic fibers.
What does gigabit internet give you?
Subscribers to gigabit internet services would be able to download an HD movie in just about 7 seconds and download over 100 photos and songs in 3 seconds. This will help users use streaming options like 4K Ultra HD, which requires 30 Mbps per stream.
Comcast introduces gigabit internet in Atlanta and Nashville
The mass communications giant announced earlier this year that it is set to introduce its latest line of faster internet to rival Google's Fiber and Verizon's FiOS. This operation was set to be launched first in Atlanta and Nashville, and then further expand to Chicago, Detroit and Miami later in the year. Comcast currently charges users $70 a month, for a three-year contract.
Where do gigabit internet services currently stand?
Gigabit internet services are currently present across 20 cities in the United States. With Comcast starting its gigabit network, and Google looking to add another 34 cities to its current operation across 3 cities, gigabit internet is estimated to cross over 50 states this year.
