Cloudflare denies hosting sites involved in Star Health data breach
US-based software company, Cloudflare, has refuted allegations of hosting two websites linked to a significant data breach at India's leading insurer, Star Health. The denial follows a lawsuit filed by Star Health last week, accusing Cloudflare of providing a platform for these sites. In response to the allegations, the firm clarified its role as an intermediary service between website hosts and end-users.
Cloudflare clarifies its role in data transmission
Cloudflare told Reuters that it's not the one hosting those disputed domains. It described its role as similar to that of a pass-through service, acting as a middleman between the website host and the end-user. This could be why a Cloudflare IP address pops up. This clarification comes as Star Health is embroiled in legal proceedings against Cloudflare.
Legal action extends to Telegram and hacker
Besides going after Cloudflare, Star Health has also decided to take legal action against the messaging app Telegram and a hacker who goes by the name xenZen. This comes after some reports claimed that sensitive customer info was shared on Telegram chatbots. The leaked details included customers' phone numbers, ID card copies, and blood reports.
Star Health obtains injunction amid data breach concerns
In light of the recent data breach, Star Health has managed to snag a temporary injunction from a Tamil Nadu court. The order mandates Telegram and xenZen to block any chatbots or websites in India, that are sharing this data online. This legal move is part of Star Health's strategy to shield its customers' data from further leaks.
Telegram's response to data breach
Telegram has told Reuters that any new bots trying to share this data were likely wiped out in a huge cleanup of its searchable content. This move comes after Star Health got a court order. The messaging app is now facing worldwide scrutiny, after its founder Pavel Durov was detained in France last month, for allegedly supporting illegal activities through the app.
Star Health reassures customers about data security
Despite the ongoing legal tussles and worries about data leaks, Star Health has given its customers a thumbs up, assuring them that their sensitive info is safe and sound. The company said that its initial checks show "no widespread compromise" of customer data. This promise is part of Star Health's strategy to keep the trust and transparency alive with its customers during the current crisis.
