Camera-maker Light to launch a smartphone with 9 massive lenses!
If you thought dual lens and triple lens cameras being offered by today's flagship phones are the pinnacle of phone camera technology, think again. Camera-maker Light, which had earlier launched a 16-lens DSLR replacement camera, is reportedly set to announce a smartphone this year which will come with somewhere between 5-9 lenses. Obviously, the phone won't come cheap. Here's more.
Throwback: Light's 16-lens L16 camera
In 2015, Light had launched a new type of camera, which, using 16 lenses, served as a replacement for DSLR cameras. Light described the L16 as a "multi-aperture computational camera" which would use at least 10 of its lenses to capture an image simultaneously, but at different focal lengths, and stitch them together to form a whopping 52MP image. It was priced at $1,950.
Light claims its multi-lens smartphones can capture 64MP photos
Now, the Washington Post reports that Light is bringing the same technology to smartphones. Light showed the Washington Post smartphone prototypes which had rear cameras sporting between 5-9 lenses. The camera-maker claims that technology can capture 64MP photos, offers advanced depth effects, and takes killer photos even in low light. Reportedly, it plans to announce such a phone by 2018 end.
Prices will be at least $1,000, if not more
If the L16's price is an indicator to go by, Light's future multi-lens smartphones are definitely not going to come cheap. Although they'll sport fewer lenses than the L16, incorporating multiple lenses in to a phone camera and backing it up with an adequate processor will certainly come with heavy costs. Simply speaking, prices are expected to be at least $1,000, if not more.
