BSNL's new SIM platform: A step toward revival
The introduction of the universal 4G and 5G-ready SIM platform is part of BSNL's broader revival strategy. This move follows the Union Cabinet's approval of a third revival package for the telecom company last year, which included an allocation of ₹89,047 crore. The package also involved allotting 4G/5G spectrum to BSNL through equity infusion, and increasing its authorized capital from ₹1,50,000 crore to ₹2,10,000 crore.
Government's support in BSNL's debt crisis
BSNL has been battling a debt crisis for some time now. The Indian government has extended its support through three revival packages to date. The first package, approved in 2019, amounted to ₹69,000 crore and brought stability to BSNL/MTNL as per ANI. A second package was sanctioned in 2022 worth ₹1.64 lakh crore, offering financial support for capex, viability gap funding for rural landlines, and settlement of dues among other things.
BSNL's financial turnaround and debt reduction
Following the government's revival packages, BSNL has seen a financial turnaround with operating profits since FY 2021-22. The company's total debt has also gone down from ₹32,944 crore to ₹22,289 crore.
