Bluetooth 6.0 will enhance Apple's Find My network: Here's how
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG) recently unveiled the specifications for the next-generation technology, Bluetooth 6.0. This advanced version introduces several improvements to the wireless protocol, including a feature that could significantly enhance Apple's Find My network for device tracking. The standout feature of this upgrade is the introduction of Bluetooth Channel Sounding, which will offer "true distance awareness."
Centimeter-level accuracy over significant distances
According to Bluetooth SIG, "Find My solutions can be greatly improved" with the help of Bluetooth 6.0. The new technology would unlock "centimeter-level accuracy over considerable distances." In layman's terms, Bluetooth 6.0 is designed to deliver the exact distance between devices, a capability that could prove beneficial for Apple's Find My network which relies on Bluetooth for device tracking.
Apple products with Bluetooth 6.0 might be a year away
Currently, Apple utilizes ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for precise distance measurement between devices, enabling the Precision Finding feature for iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirTag users. It remains unclear when Apple will adopt Bluetooth 6.0. As per the reports, it could be at least a year before the first Apple products with the new Bluetooth version arrive.
Additional features of the new technology
In addition to enhanced distance awareness, Bluetooth Channel Sounding also introduces an extra layer of security for authentication, useful for digital keys. Furthermore, Bluetooth 6.0 can transmit larger data frames and enables lower latency for audio applications. These additional features make the new protocol a comprehensive upgrade over its predecessors, potentially impacting various aspects of wireless communication and device tracking.
