Beware! A fake WhatsApp app has surfaced online
Given WhatsApp's unanimous and popular hold on the world of instant messaging, a number of fake versions of the app keep circulating from time to time. To that end, a fake WhatsApp app named WhatsApp Plus has been spotted online. Downloading the app can reportedly provide it access to your personal information like photos and phone numbers.
WhatsApp Plus is a fake version of WhatsApp
Shared via a link, WhatsApp Plus is downloaded as an .apk file. The fake WhatsApp riskware features a gold WhatsApp logo. When you try to run it, it shows itself as out of date and prompts you to install the latest version. You are redirected to a website which allows users to download 'Watts Plus Plus WhatsApp' and where everything is written in Arabic.
Use the app with four different phone numbers
According to a loose translation of the website, the app can hide information on when you received or read a text, when you are typing a message, and when you played a voice clip. Users can use the app with four different numbers from the same phone and send over 100 photos at once to their contacts.
Better safe than sorry
Users can also lock the app or even particular chats with a "secret number." However, it is not advisable to fall for these gimmicks. It is not clear how exactly the app gathers data but it is best to steer clear of fake WhatsApp versions.
