Baby thinks her name is 'Alexa', thanks to Amazon Echo
Smart assistants, like Amazon Alexa, have become a part of our daily lives. They are called several times throughout the day for tasks ranging from ordering food to providing weather/news updates. Now, while all of this is really helpful, a family is seeing a hilarious flipside of using Alexa too much - their kid thinks 'Alexa' is her own name! Here's all about it.
Using Echo speakers requires one to call 'Alexa'
Amazon's Alexa-powered smart speakers work only when the user says the default wake word 'Alexa'. This seems to have become a problem for a couple who called Alexa so many times that their 7-month-old baby started confusing her own name for Alexa. The incident came to light after Good Morning America shared a video of the baby.
Caroline did not respond when her name was called
In the video, the baby girl didn't respond to her mother despite being called multiple times by her real name - Caroline. However, whenever the mother said 'Alexa', she responded immediately by turning around, Ubergizmo reported. This is indeed one of the rarest side effects of using a digital assistant several times during a day.
Similar cases can also occur with Siri and Cortana
While this is the only case we've seen of a baby responding to calls of Alexa, there might be other parents witnessing the same issue. They could be using Alexa too much and unconsciously training their babies to respond to 'Alexa' instead of their own names. Same could be the case with Siri and Cortana but neither of them is that prevalent in homes.
Alexa-powered devices are highly successful
To note, Amazon's Alexa-powered smart speakers are already dominating the smart home category. In fact, in 2019, Amazon Echo is expected to capture 63.3% of smart speaker market, while Google Home is expected to capture 31%.
