Messenger for iOS constantly crashing due to a buggy update

Several iPhone and iPad users have reported that Facebook's Messenger app frequently started crashing after they installed its latest update (version 170.0) that released on June 15. While some people said the app fades to black and crashes to the iPhone home screen, some reported that tapping on received notifications is leading to an immediate crash.
Fix
Download a just-released version to fix the problem
Facebook is aware of the bug that is crashing the app as soon as it is opened and has released another update (version 170.1) as a fix for the same. The update is already available in the Apple App Store. You can also check which version of the Messenger app is running on your phone in the "Updates" tab of the App Store.
