ASUS ZenFone 6: Is it a OnePlus 7 Pro competitor?
Taking on the headline maker OnePlus 7 Pro, Taiwanese tech giant ASUS has launched its ZenFone 6 at an event in Spain. Touted as a flagship killer, the phone features an all-screen design, a motorized dual-lens rotating flip camera, flagship internals including a Snapdragon 855 chipset, and a beefy 5,000mAh battery. But is ZenFone 6 really a OnePlus 7 Pro competitor? Let's find out.
ASUS ZenFone 6 v/s OnePlus 7 Pro: At a glance
In terms of design, the ASUS ZenFone get an all-screen design achieved by adopting a flip camera setup. The bezels are still prominent (compared to the likes of Galaxy S10 and OnePlus 7 Pro) while the glossy rear panel lacks a premium feel. In comparison, the OnePlus flagship looks luxurious with almost no bezel and curved edges. Winner: OnePlus 7 Pro.
All about the screen
The ASUS ZenFone 6 features a 6.4-inch full-HD+ (1080x2340 pixels) IPS screen with 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and 600-nits peak brightness. Surely, the screen looks good but it doesn't even come close to matching the stunning display on the OnePlus 7 Pro. The OnePlus offering sports a 6.67-inch QHD+ (1440x3120 pixels) resolution screen with HDR10+ support and 90Hz refresh rate. Winner: Clearly, OnePlus 7 Pro.
For the shutterbugs and selfie lovers
The ZenFone 6 comes with a motorized dual-lens rear camera comprising a 48MP (f/1.7) main lens and a 13MP ultra-wide-angle lens. Notably, this camera module flips up to serve as a front-facing camera, offering high-resolution selfies. In comparison, the OnePlus 7 Pro offers a respectable 48MP+8MP+16MP triple lens setup but trails the ASUS competitor in the selfie game with its 16MP (f/2.0) selfie snapper.
Under the hood
Like the OnePlus 7 Pro, the ZenFone 6 is also powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. Further, it comes with upto 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage whereas the OnePlus flagship offers upto 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage format. The OnePlus 7 Pro also has an upper hand with a dedicated liquid cooling system.
Battery and biometric authentication
The OnePlus 7 Pro offers a 4,000mAh battery with support for 30W Speed Warp charging. It also offers an improved in-display fingerprint sensor that is touted to unlock the phone in just 0.21 seconds. In comparison, the ZenFone 6 packs a beefier 5,000mAh battery with 18W Quick Charge 4.0 support and good-old rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Winner: ZenFone 6 for the sheer battery size.
Pricing: The key factor
In India, OnePlus 7 Pro starts at Rs. 48,999 for the 6GB/128GB model and goes upto Rs. 57,999 for the 12GB/256GB variant. In comparison, the ASUS ZenFone 6 starts at EUR 499 (roughly Rs. 39,100) for the 6GB/64GB variant and goes upto EUR 599 (roughly Rs. 47,000) for the top-end 8GB/256GB model.
So, what is the final verdict?
The ASUS ZenFone 6 offers flagship-grade internals, a decent design and display, and interesting camera setup but it cannot compete with the OnePlus 7 Pro. The OnePlus flagship is more premium with an industry-leading display, top-of-the-line performance, and impressive cameras. That said, the ASUS offering will surely go up against with the standard OnePlus 7 which arrives as an upgrade to the OnePlus 6T.
