ASUS ROG Ally X gaming console to launch in June
ASUS is set to launch the ROG Ally X, the successor to its popular handheld gaming device, the ROG Ally, on June 2. The original model was a strong competitor to Steam Deck, known for its performance enhancements and smooth variable refresh rate screen. The new device would not be a significantly upgraded version but a revised edition of the original model, featuring some updates while retaining key features.
What to expect from Ally X?
The Windows-based ROG Ally X will continue to feature the AMD Z1 Extreme chipset and a 7-inch 48-120Hz VRR screen, similar to its predecessor. Unlike the Steam Deck OLED, which underwent revisions for better battery life and stability, the Ally X will maintain its original features but with enhancements. ASUS is set to incorporate a significantly larger battery pack into the Ally X, promising more than just a 30 to 40% increase in capacity.
Enhanced graphics, memory, and more ports
ASUS also plans to offer increased storage capacity, enhanced graphics and memory, and additional ports. Gabriel Meng, Senior Product Manager at ASUS, stated the new device is expected to have more than its existing 16GB of RAM. This will allow users to allocate more memory to the GPU without impacting system performance. The Ally X will also feature a longer M.2 2280 SSD slot for easier upgrades compared to the current M.2 2230 slot.
Prioritizing repairability and user comfort
The Ally X would be more repairable, with revamped joystick modules that are easily interchangeable. Despite the larger battery making the device slightly heavier, ASUS claims it has revised the grips for user comfort and made slight adjustments to the D-Pad, joysticks, and triggers. Meng also revealed that ASUS has rearranged the motherboard layout in the Ally X to move the SD card reader away from the system's vents for better performance.
