Tech promises that never came true, much to our disappointment
When it comes to technology, I am a believer. However, there is a big difference in believing and being blind. Someone made a promise and then didn't keep it. Someone said that this will happen and that didn't happen. I am not falling for it twice. That's just common sense. Over the years, there have been several incidents like these. Here are a few.
Do you want a loan?
Microsoft's Bill Gates is a name that you want to trust. He's the richest guy on planet Earth and he made it all in tech. So, when he said, "Two years from now, spam will be solved," in 2004, I literally cried out in joy. This is what we need. This is it. In reality, I am still getting emails from shady credit companies.
This was not funny
College tuition fees, for certain degrees, are not cheap. In terms of human organs, they cost almost one kidney and an arm. When in 2012, former Stanford computer science professor Sebastian Thrun said he will put an end to this nonsense and MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses) will topple colleges, students cheered. It's 2018. MOOCs are not in vogue and a college degree matters.
Two-wheeled, self-balancing scooter with an idiot on it
Segway is all about transport. Its tagline reads, "personal transportation that simply moves you." When it was introduced in 2001, Segway owner Dean Kamen smugly said to Time that Segway "will be to the car what the car was to the horse and buggy." It's been 17 years, I have only seen it in terrible movies and sometimes kids using it in malls.
I want a cool drone delivering me stuff
We expect a lot from the world's 1st, no 2nd, no 3rd richest man Jeff Bezos. He promised in 2013 that by 2015 we were going to get packages delivered by drones at our doorsteps. He had the money. Drones are cool. I believed him. There are no delivering drones in the sky. Last I heard, Amazon was still testing out the entire shindig.
I love you, but…
Elon Musk's latest company Neuralink promises to take brain-machine interface to the next level. Not only my mom and my girlfriend, but I'll also get to know what's going on in people's minds, once I clip it on. Apparently, it'll take 8-10 years more to become a reality. I love Tesla and I love Musk but I'm not buying into this hogwash.
