Apple to expand its video streaming services to Android phones
Apple is developing a television and sports app for Android, as revealed in a recent job listing seen by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The tech giant is on the hunt for a senior engineer to spearhead the creation of "fun new features" and "help build an application used by millions to watch and discover TV and sports." This move suggests that Apple is willing to put aside its rivalry with Android in order to tap into the video streaming market.
A response to streaming giants
Launched in 2019, Apple's TV service was the company's answer to competitors like Netflix and Disney+. Despite heavy investment in original content, the tech giant has not disclosed the number of subscribers or revenue generated by this service. However, it did manage to secure a best picture win for CODA at the Oscars in 2022. The decision to develop an Android app could help Apple tap into a larger viewer base.
Android's global user base: A potential market for Apple
While Apple holds a strong position in the high-end smartphone market, Android boasts more global users. The Android operating system powers over 3 billion devices worldwide, compared to Apple's 2.2 billion active devices, predominantly iPhones. Historically, Apple has strived to make its TV service available on as many platforms as possible, including Roku, smart TVs, Amazon streaming devices, and game consoles.
Strategic shift toward service revenue growth
Apple's decision to develop an Android app marks a shift in the company's strategy. Earlier this year, standalone versions of Music, TV, and device-management apps were launched for Windows. The tech giant appears to be focusing more on services for revenue growth rather than just devices. In line with its competitors, Apple also increased the price of its TV service last year to $9.99/month - twice the price when it was first launched five years ago.
